Cool Confidence: What to Wear When It’s Way Too Hot

By Grace Owen/ Style Editor for KS Style Consulting

When the sun is blazing and the humidity is unrelenting, the last thing you want is to feel trapped in your clothes. But summer style doesn't have to mean sacrificing sophistication—or comfort. Whether you're in your juggling meetings or hosting backyard gatherings, dressing well in the heat is about breathable fabrics, effortless silhouettes, and thoughtful styling.

1. Linen Vest Set

The look: A matching linen vest and high-waisted trouser set in a neutral tone (like stone or sand).

Where to wear it: Busy office days, daytime events, gallery visits

Styling tips: Pair with flat leather sandals or a small heel with a pop of color. Add minimal layering jewelry and a tote to stay sharp but not stuffy.

2. Slip Dress + Button-Up

The look: A silky or cotton slip dress layered with an open oversized linen shirt or crisp button-down.

Where to wear it: Dinner dates, rooftop drinks, weekend hangs

Styling tips: Tie the shirt at the waist or drape it off the shoulders. Add heeled sandals and statement earrings for a polished evening look.

3. The Shirt Dress

The look: A knee-length or midi-length shirt dress in cotton poplin or tencel.

Where to wear it: Casual Fridays, coffee meetings, brunch

Styling tips: Add structure with a woven or leather belt. Finish with loafers or block-heel sandals and a bold bag for contrast.

4. Wide-Leg Trouser + Tank Combo

The look: High-waisted wide-leg pants in linen or a breezy blend paired with a ribbed or racerback tank.

Where to wear it: City errands, outdoor lunch dates, casual work settings

Styling tips: Tuck in the tank for a clean line. Layer with a lightweight blazer if you need more coverage or want to elevate the outfit.

5. Midi Skirt + Boxy Tee

The look: A flowy midi skirt with an oversized cropped tee or tucked-in boxy tank.

Where to wear it: Farmers markets, beach towns, weekend museum trips

Styling tips: Choose light colors and breathable fabrics like gauze or cotton voile. Accessorize with simple sneakers or flat slides and a raffia bucket bag.

6. The Breezy Jumpsuit

The look: A relaxed-fit, sleeveless jumpsuit in rayon, modal, or cotton-linen blend.

Where to wear it: Travel days, lunch with friends, client coffee catch-ups

Styling tips: Top with cat-eye sunglasses and slip-on sandals.

7. Lightweight Maxi Dress

The look: A flowy cotton or chiffon maxi dress with either spaghetti straps or a halter neckline.

Where to wear it: Garden parties, vacation dinners, family get-togethers

Styling tips: Go bold with color or prints. Add delicate jewelry and low strappy heels or leather slides for a “barely-there” elegance.

8. Kaftan or Tunic Dress

The look: A mid-length kaftan in a crisp white, ocean blue, or block print.

Where to wear it: Poolside lunches, resort wear, casual gatherings

Styling Tip: Choose one with a subtle print or embroidery. Style with flat slides, chunky bangles, and a woven clutch.

8. Matching Shorts Set

The look: A short-sleeve button-down and matching tailored shorts in cotton or terry cloth.

Where to wear it: Beach brunch, staycations, casual date nights

Styling tips: Keep it open with a simple tank underneath or wear the top tucked.
