Styling How To: Shoe Pairing

A top question I receive from my clients is “I love these pants, but what shoes do I wear with them?”. One thing I tell them is that it is not always practical for the best looking outfit. For example in the dead of winter it can be hard to wrap your mind around wearing a loafer flat with a pair of ankle pants, but if that is your best cut and length for your body then rock it and work around the elements.

I tell clients to arrive at work in their “commuter shoes” which can be anything from a snow boot to a pair of comfy sneakers and then change into your outfit appropriate shoe once you arrive at work.

Here is a little cheat sheet when it comes to pant/dress/shoe combos…

The Loafer

Best with a ankle length trouser, Jean, or straight fit trouser. Can be worn with a solid color skirt as well!

The Slide

Best worn with a slim fit pant or denim for weekend or for work.

The Versatile Bootie

Can be worn with a dress or skirt with or without tights. If wearing with denim or a slim cut trouser, cuff the pant up or under so there is about a half inch of skin showing between the top of the boot and the bottom of the pant.

The Block Heel or Pump

This is the everything shoe! You can literally wear this with everything in a nude or black option. From causal to work to date night this is a shoe staple!
