Winter Wardrobe Cleanup

Winter Wardrobe Cleanup

By Grace Owen (Styling Assistant)

The clothes we accumulate over the year ( or two considering Covid ) seem to amount to cosmic congestion, right around the time we are searching desperately for winter layers. Where did I put that black puffer again? I could have sworn it was over here… Maybe it’s under the pile of impulse buys I meant to return. No need to fret, we will find that black puffer and the rest of your hidden closet waiting patiently to shine. All you need to do is a little reorganizing.

Nothing makes me feel better than a good clean-out, let’s start there. Put on that podcast you love or your favorite oldies track, grab those trash bags and bins and get to business.

Take Inventory

You can’t know what to get rid of if you don’t know what you have. Start by pulling everything out of your closet and laying it on a flat surface like your bed or table. And yes, I mean everything.

Bye-Bye Summer

Unless you find yourself fortunate enough to live on the West coast, you need to put away those summer clothes for the season. Personally, I believe clear bins are the best way to store seasonal fashion, fold and arrange them to your liking so long as you know what’s inside. Do keep your basics that transition throughout the seasons, like neutral tanks and tees.

Autumn Inventory

Before we start putting everything back go through all your fall clothes just to make sure everything fits and is not too worn. Only keep things you actually enjoy wearing. That plaid shirt that you have been saving for years needs to go, you don’t really like it anyway if you did you would have worn it. Sometimes it’s hard to let go of things especially when we live in a world where we never know what will happen next, I get it. But as a general rule, if you haven’t worn it in the last two years, toss it. Elevate any bit of tossing guilt by donating your items, not only are you helping others you can even get tax reductions for it!

Organization Tips

Everyone’s closet is different, ranging in size and shape but a couple of key tricks stay the same.

  • effective folding

  • new ulitization of unused space

  • item dedication

Using these three keys methods you will make your closet much more approachable and functional.

New Ideas

Tired of your layout or looking for suggestions on what to add? I got you there too!

  • Add in a small dresser under hanging items to free up more space and get rid of some of that hanger congestion.

  • Add another hanging rack and put your most-used pieces on it for easy access.

  • Add in dividers! There are great options on amazon with many shapes and sizes to fit your needs.

  • Utilize wall space! Hang some purses or other little items as both storage and room decor.

Appreciation

Look at you! You did it, doesn’t it feel so much better. Give yourself a pat on the back and admire your good work. Now that we know what we have we can gradually add in new items to complete our perfect winter wardrobe.
