Fashion Week Recap: A Look into Spring/Summer 2023

(By Grace Owen/ Style Editor)

Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2023 served as the cherry on top to an thrilling, innovative, and inspiring Fashion Week in New York, London, and Milan. This season marked an especially phonemial show season for viewers from Gucci's entirely twin runway to Coperni’s spray on dress for Bella Hadid. Aside from the theatrics this season also provided exciting trends to look forward to for next year. So while we may be going into the winter season it's always fun to look ahead at what's to come and maybe even get ahead on some early inspiration! Sit back and enjoy your scroll through this season's biggest trends.

Metallic

Beginning with one of the funniest trends this season - metallic/disco themed attire! The runway showed us to let it shine and not let anyone dull your sparkle this year. Don’t be afraid to be flashy and shiny whether it be an entire dress or a flashy bag. I feel this trend can get an early start especially with New Years coming up consider incorporating this style into your looks!

Sheer

Sheer see-through fabrics were seen across the major runways with designers experimenting with layering and completely sheer looks. This will prove to be a major spring/summer trend, not only are the fabrics breathable they give the light playful vibe that everyone is looking to grasp. Anyone can experiment with this trend in whichever way they feel comfortable - even if it's just sheer trimming - rock it out!

Cargo Pants

Many of us think of cargo pants as the traditional neutral toned construction material, but this year proved they can be and are so much more. Floral cargos, crushed velvet, metallic, silk, etc were seen on the runway this season. This trend is a personal favorite of mine this year because of how versatile they are for the changing seasons - you could go out and get some now and wear them through fall, winter, spring, and summer! How exciting! And with so many options to choose from there is sure to be one that suits your personal style.

Bubble Hems

This trend is especially playful and fun! Different from what we have been seeing in the past seasons the bubble hem/silhouettes bring back a Y2K style classic. They are voluminous, bold, and bring out the inner child in all of us. I could totally see this style starting in the winter season with bold red and white as a fun party outfit!

Parachute Style

It was interesting to see this style on the runway this season because similar to cargo pants many attribute this sporty/utilitarian accessorized look as a fall style. But big designers like Miu Miu and Hermes challenged this thinking and used the strappy parachute pull ties on many garments and pulled them off beautifully. This is another trend you can get ahead of right now incorporating the sports wear into your windbreakers/layering items for added style.

Race Car Driver

The look of race car drivers off duty has been increasingly popular the last few months and is sure to continue into next year from what we have seen on the runway. Leather jackets, bold lines, and colorful designs are general themes that are seen throughout the trend. The key here is the perfect leather jacket that gives you a sleek look - whether its a ‘ladylike’ form fitting style or oversized style you can’t disappoint. Life is your highway look and feel like it with this trend!

Canadian Tux

To conclude our trend recap I present to you: the canadian tux, or rather head to toe denim. This is another one of my favorite trends to emerge this season because it is also extremely transitional and chances are you already have some great denim in your closet! The runways were presenting to us baggy oversized jean looks from cargos to trench coats to bags and anything else you could possibly think of. All to say the more denim the better this season - bonus points if it's all at once! Just be sure to tone match your denims so that they flow together and look cohesive.
